This booklet summarizes the preliminary statistical findings of field surveys on the perceptions of the wall amongst Palestinian and Israeli Jerusalemites conducted by the International Peace and Cooperation Center (IPCC) and the Jerusalem Institute for Jerusalem Studies (JIIS). The presentation of the results should contribute to a better understanding of the consequences of building a wall between peoples, focusing on space separation and how that is internalized in the memories, perceptions, and behaviors of the people affected. The findings enable us to better assess the impact of the wall and to develop policies that will improve the living conditions of those most affected by the separation and displacement it causes.

The work conducted on the Palestinian sample involved in-depth, face-to-face interviews, covering a sample of 1,115 households distributed over three areas: 1) Palestinian neighborhoods within Jerusalem municipal boundaries that are included within the wall; 2) Palestinian neighborhoods within Jerusalem municipal boundaries that are excluded outside the wall; and 3) Jerusalem suburbs and its hinterland within the Jerusalem governorate. The Israeli sample totaled to 500 households in West Jerusalem and East Jerusalem Jewish settlements which were contacted by telephone.

The report includes four sections: Section I presents a theoretical framework for the wall’s conception: What ideas and objectives underlie a decision to erect a wall between peoples? Section II details the major findings of the Palestinian survey: How do they perceive and experience the wall? Section III reviews the major results of the Israeli Jerusalemite survey. Section IV contrasts the differences between the Palestinian and Israeli responses.
